What Is a General Purpose Relay?

A general purpose relay is an electrically operated switch designed to control one or more load circuits through a separate control circuit. In an electromagnetic relay, the control circuit energizes a coil. The energized coil creates a magnetic field that attracts a movable armature and changes the state of the relay contacts.

The control side and contact side are electrically isolated. This allows a PLC, sensor, thermostat, timer, push button, or low-power controller to operate a load circuit with a different voltage or higher current.

A typical relay contains:

  • An electromagnetic coil
  • A magnetic core
  • A movable armature
  • A return spring
  • Normally open contacts
  • Normally closed contacts
  • Common terminals
  • Silver-alloy contact points
  • A protective enclosure
  • Plug-in pins or connection terminals

When the coil is not energized, the COM terminal is connected to the NC terminal. When the coil is energized, the armature moves and transfers COM from NC to NO. This operating principle enables the relay to perform switching, isolation, interlocking, signal conversion, and basic control-logic functions.

General purpose relays are not normally standalone overload or short-circuit protection devices. Fuses, circuit breakers, overload relays, sensors, or a control system must detect abnormal conditions and then command the relay to disconnect the load.

How to Choose General Purpose Relay

Choose a general purpose relay according to the coil voltage, contact configuration, load type, operating current, and installation method. Confirm whether the control supply is AC or DC, especially when selecting a general purpose relay 24V. Check the rated current and inrush current of motors, lamps, solenoids, or other inductive loads, and use a contactor for high-power equipment. Before installation, verify the socket pin arrangement and general purpose relay wiring diagram to ensure the coil, COM, NO, and NC terminals are connected correctly.

Structural Components

Electromagnetic System: Comprises a coil wound with insulated copper wire, a soft magnetic iron core (silicon steel sheet) for low eddy current loss, and an armature with adjustable air gap.

Contact System: Features silver alloy contacts with excellent conductivity and wear resistance, designed with arc-extinguishing devices for high-current applications.

FAQ

Is a general purpose relay the same as a control relay?

A general purpose relay can be used as a control relay because it allows a low-power input signal to control another circuit. However, “control relay” is a broader application term and may also include specialized industrial relays designed for particular standards, contact arrangements, or operating duties.
DPDT means double-pole, double-throw. It provides two electrically separate changeover contacts that operate simultaneously. In the HWRELAY model coding, the 2Z contact configuration corresponds to two changeover contact groups.
HW-10F-2Z, HW-10FT-2Z, HW-MK2P, or HW-MK2PT can be configured with two changeover contacts. The coil must then be ordered as either DC 24V or AC 24V according to the available control supply.
Yes. General purpose relay HVAC applications include thermostat interfaces, fan controls, dampers, pumps, alarms, compressor-contactor coils, and building automation. The selected relay must be correctly rated for the actual load and inrush current.
It may switch a small motor only when the motor’s running current, starting current, voltage, duty cycle, and power factor remain within the relay’s motor-load capability. For most industrial motors and compressors, the relay should operate a contactor rather than directly switch the motor.
The standard version performs automatic electromagnetic switching. The T-type version includes an optional self-locking or manual-test function that can assist commissioning and troubleshooting.
No. Although both are rated at 24V, the coil construction and electrical characteristics are different. The relay must match both the voltage value and the AC or DC supply type.
Terminal positions differ between relay families and sockets. Checking the diagram prevents incorrect coil connections, reversed NO/NC wiring, short circuits, and damage to the relay or controller.
