It consists of coil and iron core. The coil is the input part of the intermediate relay, when the coil is energized, a magnetic field is generated. The iron core is usually made of soft magnetic material, such as silicon steel sheet, which serves to enhance the magnetic field. The strength of the magnetic field is related to the number of turns of the coil and the amount of current passing through the coil. For example, when a control current passes through the coil, the iron core is magnetized and generates sufficient electromagnetic suction.

Intermediate relays have several types of contacts, including normally open contacts (NO), normally closed contacts (NC), and changeover contacts. Normally open contacts are disconnected when the relay is not in operation and closed when the coil is energized; normally closed contacts are closed when the relay is not in operation and disconnected when the coil is energized; and change-over contacts enable switching between the common terminal and the normally open or normally closed terminal. Contact materials are usually silver alloy and other conductive and wear-resistant materials to ensure that in frequent action to maintain good contact performance.
